Biography:

Nancy was one of the first UK students to benefit from the Erasmus scheme, spending a year studying at the Ecole Des Hautes Etudes Des Industries Chimiques (EHICS) in Strasbourg as part of a four year BSc in Chemistry with French at UMIST (1988–1992). Following graduation Nancy worked in a number of different industries and sectors, both in research and regulatory affairs.
Following a career break to raise a family, Nancy retrained as a science teacher, teaching primarily in the FE sector on both A level and vocational courses (level 2 & 3 BTEC), and acted as an A Level Examiner for a number of UK exam boards.

PhD: Characterization of surface modified inorganic particles & the influence on performance in liquid formulations

The functionalisation of the surface of TiO2 particles using adsorbed substances will provide added value, both commercially and functionally, to this already important component of many particulate formulations, especially in the coatings.
It is hoped that by adsorbing differing CST polymers onto to TiO2 particles, the rheology of the resultant aqueous slurry can be influenced by changes in temperature. Various blends of CST polymers will be systematically trialled and the resultant aqueous slurry characterised using a variety of techniques.
This would have a valuable application to the coatings industry.

Research Project(s) during degree:

  • Final year - Researching the properties of BaPb1-xBixO3 as a superconductor
  • Final year - Development of sputtered neutral mass spectroscopy as an analytical tool

Industrial experience/placements:

  • Scientific Officer, Food Additives Division, Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, London
At that time, harmonisation of legislation across the EU had just started and Nancy’s role involved collecting data from the UK’s food industry on the food additives used in addition to handling general queries from industry and consumers on the legislation and use of food additives in the UK.
  • Research Chemist & Regulatory Affairs Specialist Courtaulds Coatings (International Paint, now Akzo Nobel), Tyne & Wear
Nancy spent a year working in the ‘Top Coat Clear’ research team, developing a powder coating suitable for use as a clear top coat for the automotive industry. This project was established in response to evolving VOC legislation.

Outreach, training and other activities:

  • Chemistry Lecturer, Bradford College and Kirklees College, 2007 to 2014
  • A Level Chemistry examiner, Edexcel, Edexcel International and OCR, 2011 – 2014
  • Module Author, Edexcel, Pearson BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Pharmaceutical Science
  • Masters research project in year 1 of CDT:
  • ‘Spreading particles in additive manufacture’ with Professor Andrew Bayly, Chemical & Process Engineering
